WHO takole opisuje namen SHOC-a:

“The SHOC is the nerve centre of WHO’s global epidemic response providing a single point of coordination for response to acute public health crises including infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters and chemical emergencies. It is the hub of alert and response operations, combining the latest in information and communications technologies to support field operations and facilitate collaboration with Member States and technical partners in external networks such as the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN).”

9 May 2009 — As of 06:00 GMT, 9 May 2009, 29 countries have officially reported 3440 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 1364 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 45 deaths. The United States has reported 1639 laboratory confirmed human cases, including two deaths. Nova gripa

WHO zjutraj poroča, da se je število obolelih v enem dnevu povečalo za 392 obolelih (plus 34%).

  • Mexico has reported 822 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 29 deaths.
  • USA has reported 403 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders.

There is no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products.

CNN opozarja, da veliko ljudi enači pandemijo ne samo z velikim številom obolelih, ampak tudi z velikim številom mrtvih. Kot vidimo iz podatkov o številu okuženih in geografski razširjenosti virusa, oba pojava nista nujno povezana. Deloma je za nesporazum kriv tudi WHO, ki je na svoji strani objavil, da bi pandemija povzročila veliko število obolenj in posledično smrti.

Zato si še enkrat oglejmo definicijo pandemije.

Trenutno smo v peti fazi pandemske nevarnosti, kar preprosto pomeni, da se je virus prenesel s človeka na človeka v najmanj dveh državah v eni regiji WHO (ta je svet razdelil v 6 regij). Torej – če se je v Mehiki in ZDA pojavil prenos bolezni iz človeka na človeka znotraj obeh držav, velja peta stopnja nevarnosti.

Šesta stopnja pandemske nevarnosti pa začne veljati, ko se pojavijo izbruhi na nivojih posameznih skupnosti (npr. mest, regij itd.) v vsaj še eni novi WHO regiji. Če se bo torej izbruh pojavil še v Evropi (v Londonu so zaprli nekaj šol, okužbe se relativno hitro širijo tudi v Španiji), so izpolnjeni formalni kriteriji za razglasitev pandemije. Zato WHO vztrajno ponavlja, da bo morebiti razglasil tudi 6. stopnjo nevarnosti.

Vendar pozor – še vedno govorimo samo o razširjenosti virusa, ki je v tem trenutku šibak in ne povzroča večjih težav. Nevarnost je, da se bo razširil na južno polooblo, kjer se začenja zima in se obenem še genetsko spremenil, tako da bo postal bolj smrten. V tem primeru, bomo imeli težavno jesen. Vsekakor pa tudi razglasitev 6. stopnje nevarnosti oz. panedmije “ne pomeni konca sveta“, pravi Margaret Chan, generalna direktorica WHO.
